Most people know that Parthenon in Athens was a pagan temple. Fewer know that it was also, at one time, a mosque. Islam came to Greece at the invitation of the Byzantine Empire to curb the Serbs and thus the Muslims stayed for over 500 years and as late as 1913, 40 percent of the population of Macedonia was Muslim. In Thrace (and not only) – Greek Islamic architecture is clearly visible. Cyprus still has an Islamic influence due to its Muslim population of nearly 20%.
